The Reel Sisters
A naked girl gets swept downstream and is fished out by four women fly fishers. Tales of adventure, as well as stories of renewal, discovery, and tragedy follow the five women as they find each other (and themselves) through the sport of fly fishing. Through the voice of each character, The Reel Sisters fosters the notion that fly fishing has the potential to transcend age, gender, culture, and even socioeconomic barriers, and can occasionally be the glue that binds us. The Reel Sisters is a story about the power of women friendships, and how we learn a little bit about ourselves each time we step into the river. By the end of the book, you’ll want to start planning your own Reel Sisters adventures.

Review | Rule #1 of fly fishing: always go pee before you put your waders on. This line is what attracted me to The Reel Sisters by Michelle Cummings and kept me reading throughout. At first, I thought this was some guide to fly-fishing. After reading the first few pages, I thought it was a record of events that took place during fly-fishing, only to realize that, although fly-fishing brought them together, this is just a record of the friendship between Veronica, Amanda, Sophie, and Rose. After watching a movie about fly-fishing, Sophie developed an interest in the art. As a child, she always went hunting with her brothers and other relatives. In fact, she shot her first prey when she was only nine. However, she ditched hunting after realizing that it had negative environmental effects. With help from Buck, a fly-fishing trainer, she learns how to cast, how to determine the bait, etc. She later meets Rose in a fly-fishing shop. It emerges that Rose is more experienced. She learns a lot from her and even enjoys watching her fishing. She met Veronica on a plane, and Amanda during a military party she once hosted. Together, they make the reel sisters and share their experiences. With 429 pages, this book is primarily meant to encourage women and children to take part in fly-fishing. In fact, the last few pages are filled with contact addresses for groups tasked with teaching women and children how to fly-fish. Each state in the United States has a unique contact address.
